River Safety & Tips

CEDAR RIVER CONDITIONS

Your safety is our top priority. Because both river conditions and weather can change quickly, we only offer river route rentals when the flow is just right—not too high, not too low—and when the forecast looks safe and stable.  On days when the river isn’t ideal or when storms may be in the forecast, you can still enjoy a peaceful paddle with our hourly rentals on the Mill Pond, as long as conditions allow.  We keep a close eye on water levels and weather and will contact you should your rental need to be rescheduled. What's the weather doing today? Check here.

KAYAKING DIFFICULTY: The Cedar River is generally a calm and enjoyable paddle, normal conditions are at most a Class I (moving water with a few riffles & small waves, few or no obstructions) but like any natural waterway, it has obstacles such as rocks, submerged trees, and debris. We encourage all paddlers to stay alert, steer around obstacles, and always wear a life jacket. As with any outdoor activity, understanding your surroundings and using caution will help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the water.

Click for Current River Levels.  Data is collected in real time by the US Geological Survey with gauge height (river depth) and flow rates (river current). This should give you a good idea of what the river is doing right now in our area.

RIVER SAFETY

  • Exposure to cool air or cold water can lead to hypothermia, even when temperatures are well above freezing. Dress appropriately and bring spare clothes in case you get wet.
  • Standing and sudden sideways shifts can make the kayak unstable.
  • If you fall out of a kayak keep your head upstream, feet downstream, kick and back paddle to control your movement if you can’t stand up.
  • Water riffles mean that rocks lie close to the surface. Follow the smooth water shaped like a “V” pointing downstream.
  • Keep the front or bow of the kayak headed downstream with the current.
  • When leaving vehicles at landings, remove or hide valuables.

PROTECT THE RIVER

  • Mussels are protected because they are endangered species. Please do not remove them from the river.
  • Toilets are available at Lafeyette Park and Mill Pond. If toilets are not available, bury human waste at least 6 inches deep and at least 100 feet from the river.
  • Bring a trash bag to carry out all trash. Glass and styrofoam beverage containers are prohibited on the river.
